C. Schmidt & Sons brewery 1914 and 2000

In 1914 C. Schmidt & Sons Brewing Co. built a new brew house for their business. The brewery was designed by the famous Philadelphia architect Otto C. Wolf. At the time the brewery was brewing over 200,000 barrels of beer a year. In 1976 the brewery was bought out and the brewery eventually closed and remained abandoned for at least 20 years before being torn down and replaced with new real estate. Below are some 1914 images and some images from the ruins in 2000.

The 1914 images and story are from Brewer's Journal volume 42 (1914):

Charles Schaufler brewery 1896 and 2025

There seems to be little information about Charles Schaufler and his breweries. There are a couple ads in the German press of the day but no hard info about production except for one article published in 1897 that shows the amount of barrels each brewery in Philadelphia produced. So, in 1896 Schaufler produced 800 barrels of beer.

According to oldbreweries.com he had at least three different addresses between 1876 and 1900. Between 1881 and 1900 he was brewing in a building at 816-818 N. 12th Street. In the book The 36th Annual Convention of The United States Brewers Association, June 1896 there is a photo of that brewery. This brewery building still exists today in a slight modified form.

Huger, Abner & Beyer’s lager beer brewery fire

Destructive Fire

'Huger, Abner & Beyer’s lager beer brewery, in the northeast part of the city, was destroyed by fire last night, together with its contents. The loss amounted to fifteen thousand dollars, which is covered by insurance.'

       -Philadelphia Inquirer, September 21, 1865-

I looked for this brewery on Old Breweries.com but didn't find it listed.
